Weimaraner & Weimaraner Longhair
There are two Varieties of Weimaraner.
The 'Weimaraner' (with a short coat) and 'Weimaraner Longhair'.
These two Varieties are the same Breed and are born in the same litter as one another.
To produce the Weimaraner Longhair, parents must either be Longhairs themselves or Weimaraners that both carry the Longhair (LH) gene.
The Longhair gene is recessive so in a litter of puppies that have both Varieties, there are usually more Weimaraners (with short coats) than Weimaraner Longhairs. From a litter of 10 puppies 3-4 may be Longhairs.
All the puppies in the litter with a short coat will all carry the Longhair (LH) gene.
If a Weimaraner (with a short coat) that carries the Longhair gene is bred to a Weimaraner that doesn't carry the LH gene, puppies in the litter will all have short coats but each puppy will have a 25% chance of carrying the Longhair gene.
Keeping this in mind, the Longhair gene pool in Australia is much larger than some may think. While there may not appear to be many Longhairs around, many Weimaraners (with a short coat) carry the LH gene. Any Weimaraner that carries the LH gene is able to produce Longhair offspring when bred with a Longhair carrier or Weimaraner Longhair.
Exact numbers for those Weimaraners that carry the Longhair gene are unknown as not all offspring are tested for the LH gene. It can be carried for several generations by shorthaired parents before producing Longhair puppies in litters unexpectedly.
The only way to know if a Weimaraner (with a short coat) carries the LH gene is by a simple DNA test.
Both varieties have the same Standard, the only difference is the Weimaraner Longhair's coat length. They have feathering on their ears, legs and tail. The coat on the rest of the body is about 3 - 5cm in length, with or without undercoat.
