Is A Weimaraner for you?
The Weimaraner is Active, Intelligent, and Affectionate.
Prospective owners must keep in mind that the Weimaraner was originally breed as a hunting/working dog with a fabulous nose and great stamina.
Even after thousands of generations these instincts can still remain strong.
* Weimaraners are extremely intelligent and learn quickly which can make it easy when training. The downside of their intelligence is that they will soon become bored if the training is too repeditive and not varied. This breed needs firm, consistent training starting at puppyhood. A Weimaraner without boundries can become stubborn and willful. Without proper leadership owning a Weimaraner can become a very unpleasant experience.
* Being socialized/exposed well with people, places, things and other animals throughout their lives the Weimaraner is a pleasure to be around and to own. They are brave, protective and very loyal, the Weimaraner makes a good guard and watchdog. Weimaraners absolutely crave leadership and are eager to please. Without leadership/training/manners they will not be stable minded, may be stressed, possibly developing separation anxiety, becoming destructive and noisy.
* Owners should be smarter than the dog!
This may sound odd but Weimaraners are very intelligent and can easily rule the home if not trained or socialized appropriately from an early age. As well as having room to run they thrive on varied activities that challenge them mentally such as Scent Work, Obedience and learning Tricks.
The Weimaraner is not usually very well suited to a first time dog owner.
Training should not be harsh but firm and consistent.
Positive training is a must with a Weimaraner as their trust cannot be gained once broken.
* They are good with children and happily live with different pets if introduced to them at an early age.
* Because this breed is large and so full of energy, basic training and manners is a must!
Give your Weimaraner plenty of exercise and mental stimulation or he will become very noisy and destructive.
Trying to 'wear your Weimaraner out' by physical activity alone will create a super fit dog and potentially further problems. As well as being exercised regularly learning to relax and be patient are just as important.
* Spend a lot of time when they are young on basic training and socializing including how to walk nicely on a lead, next to you. They grow to be big and strong very quickly and if not lead trained at a young age taking them for a walk can be an awful experience.
This breed likes to bark, and needs to be corrected if it becomes excessive.
Very hardy, with a good sense of smell, and a passionate worker, the Weimaraner is suitable for all kinds of hunting and various Dog Sports.
* Without proper exercise and basic training they can be very rambunctious and difficult to control.
Remember you only get back what you put in!
Those who take the time to train will be rewarded with a loving, lifelong companion.
