What is DNA Profiling & DNA Testing?
DNA Profiling.
DNA Profiling is essentially used for conformation of parentage.
A simple swab is taken from the cheek and sent to a Lab for analysis.
DNA Profiling is a useful tool for:
- Positive identification of a dog
- Confirmation of parentage
- Multiple sire mating
- Permanent animal identification record
- Accurate tracing of pedigrees
DNA Testing.
DNA Testing not only tells you who the parents of puppies are, it goes a step further by detecting any genetic diseases and traits specific to each breed.
DNA Testing parents prior to breeding, and checking the DNA status of suitable mates, can have huge positive health implications for both your prospective puppies and potentially the health and welfare of the breed as a whole. Inherited diseases passed from one generation to the next can cause terrible suffering and possibly shorten the life span of the dog.
* At ASHBOLT I have chosen to DNA TEST all of my breeding dogs and will DNA Test every puppy in future litters.
This gives me valuable information as a Breeder not only on the health of my dogs but all offspring they produce. This gives a much more accurate picture of overall health than if I only DNA Test the puppy or puppies I keep myself from a litter.
Currently there aren't many breed specific tests for Weimaraners available, hopefully there will be in the future.
* DNA Profiling has become compulsary for all Dogs Qld. Members as of January 2018 to varify perentage.
While the utmost care is taken when chosing parents of litters, please note that no amount of scientific screening of breeding stock for hereditory defects can ever 100% guarentee that puppies will be free of these problems. However breeding from sound, health tested parents certainly increases the probability that the puppies will also be sound and healthy.
Results are in each of my dog's profiles under 'My Grey Ghosts'.
