Let's talk about Beagle Health Testing
Health testing is a relative newcomer in today’s breeding program. Whereas in the past it was the progeny that alerted the breeder of possible issues, today we can test and avoid passing on genetic issues in our wonderful breed.
Listed below are the issues that will be discussed in the coming months:
- • Epilepsy - Lafora
- • Musladin-Lueke Syndrome (MLS)
- • Imerslund-Grasbeck Syndrome (IGS)
- • Neonatal Cerebellar Cortical Degeneration (NCCD)
- • Factor VII Deficiency
- • Steriod Responsive Meningitis (SRM: Beagle Pain Syndrome)
- • Granulomatous Meningo-Encephalitis (GMR)
If after reading the information provided you are concerned about your beagle, please contact your Vet and discuss your concerns with them. Do not rely on social media groups or other non-qualified advice.
If you are looking to buy a puppy, do not be afraid to ask your prospective breeder about health issues and testing. Most reputable breeders will have a testing program in place and will be aware of the above health conditions. They will be able to tell you the genetic history of their lines.
