Judging the 109th Championship Specialty in Sydney, Australia

I was very delighted to be invited to judge the 109th Championship Specialty in NSW, Australia, the 8th of April 2023. It was a long time coming though, since I was originally invited to judge in 2020 just after the COVID pandemic began its ravage all over the world. This was my first judging assignment outside Europe, and my first trip to Australia as well. The 3 years of waiting through the pandemic was worth it all.
My biggest worry before the show was the different judging procedure from Europe, and how I would manage it, but once the show started, everything came naturally. And when I was in doubt of the procedure, I had an excellent Steward in Mr. Eric Temlett to guide me.
I was very fortunate with the entries of 78 Beagles, and I was told it was a record for the previous 10 years.
The showground was the “Dogs NSW” in Orchard Hills, Sydney, and the weather was sunny and 26 ⁰C (79 ⁰F), and almost perfect for an outdoor Dog Show.
I did look forward to see the type and quality in the Beagles “Down under”, and I was not disappointed with what I saw. The overall quality of the Beagles was high, and most had a compact body with well angulated quarters. Many had good heads with soft expressions, although a few could have had a longer muzzle.
I found the dogs to be in excellent show condition, and well prepared for the show.
My Challenge Dog and Res. Best in Show was from the Open Dog Class, the 2½ year old Ch. Gibbgran Qeens Counsel (Clarion Qeens Fancy Toy x Ch. Gibbgran Echo Beach) and bred and owned by Mr. Grant W. Gibson. I thought he a well-balanced dog of exceptional quality, having a compact body and well angulated quarters. His head was well shaped with dark soft eyes. He had a beautiful long neck flowing into a well laid back shoulder, a level topline and a well set tail. He moved parallel and with good drive.
The Reserve Challenge Dog was from the Intermediate Dog Class, the almost 2 year old Ch. Devma Time Traveller (AI) (Ch. Imagine Me Ike From Elly’s Pack x Ch. Devma Anything You Can Do), Bred by Ms. Sue Hutcheson and Owned by Ms. Sue Hutcheson & Ms. R. Triffitt. He is a well balanced and well build dog of good substance. He had a strong head with a dark eye and a nice chest of good length and depth. He moved well with drive.
I really enjoyed judging the bitches as well, and my Challenge Bitch ended up as Best in Show. She was 3½ year old SUP Ch. Johgra Summer in Paris (Johgra Undeniable x Mayster River Page), bred and owned by Joshua and Melissa Grant. She instantly caught my eye when she entered the ring, full of charisma and with excellent movements. She was feminine with a soft expression and beautiful dark eyes. She had a compact body and a lovely outline, good shoulders and good angulation both in front and rear.
My Reserve Challenge Bitch was 4½ year old Ch. Gibbgran Goodnes Gracious Me (Clarion CrackIn Hot N Handsome x Ch. Gibbgran Echo Beach), bred and owned by Grant W. Gibson. She had a strong but femine head, a dark eye and a strong neck. Her body was compact and strong with a nice topline and a well angulated front and rear quarters. She moved parallel with good reach and drive.
Above is only named 4 beagles, but I could keep on going, because there were so many fine specimens at the show. A funny thing I was told afterwards was, that the Challenge Dog, The Challenge Bitch and Res. Challenge Bitch was somehow related, going back to Truda Mawby’s Clarion lines.
I feel very honored being invited to judge the 109th Championship Specialty in Sydney, Australia, and it is a memory I always will treasure. I special thanks to The Beagle Club of NSW Inc., and to Sue Bownds who took really good care of my partner Karin and I while in Sydney.
Baby Puppy Dog
1st LUKARA DANGER ZONE
4 months old very promising puppy with a pleasing masculine head and dark eyes with soft expression. Well set ears and correct head proportions. Good length of neck, but could have a more laid-back shoulder and a longer upper arm. Nice forechest, but it should not get any more pronounced, excellent bone and substance, compact body and a well set tail, Excellent rear angulations. Moves parallel with good drive and tail carriage.
2nd ALMANZOR TOOT ME BABY
5 months old, compact puppy with good substance. Nice and masculine head with dark eyes and a soft expression. Ears still a little long and curling inwards. Well laid back shoulder, nice chest and good feet. Nice short loin and well angulated rear quarters. He moves with drive, but the topline could be stronger on the move, and I would prefer a better tail carriage.
3rd LUKARA GHOST DRIVER
4 months old compact puppy with a lovely head. Soft expression and beautiful dark eyes, strong bone good chest. Good topline and well-angulated rear, but hocks could be lower set. Well set tail. I would prefer to have more legs on him. Moves well with good tail carriage.
Minor Puppy Dog
1st UNEETOILE MR TURN TH PAIGE
6 months old very promising puppy full of quality. Lovely type, compact with good substance and bone. Nice head with dark eyes. The underjaw could be slightly more developed. Well set ears. Good reach of neck with well laid back shoulders. Excellent chest and a nice short loin. Excellent topline with a well set tail. Well angulated rear. Moves parallel with good drive.
Puppy Dog
1st CLIFTOP SAY YOU WANT ME
10 months old. A young dog with a strong body. He has a masculine head, but his expression would benefit from larger and less slanted eyes. Excellent bone and forechest. Could have more reach of neck. Good spring of rib that could extend further back. Strong rear quarters. Moves well and parallel.
Junior Dog
1st BALDEV UNDER PRESSURE
1 year old, well-balanced, compact dog of excellent type. Masculine head with a nice dark eye. Well shaped head with well-set ears. Good reach of neck. Strong body and topline, Well set tail and well angulated rear. Moves parallel with drive.
2nd KUNANYI IDEAL SHOWMAN (AI)
1 year old dog in good condition. A powerful head with slightly too much lip. Nice dark eyes and well-set ears. Good reach of neck. Shoulders are well laid back, but too forward placed on the body. Strong bone and excellent chest. Level topline. A little long in loin. Well set on tail and well-angulated rear. Moves with drive.
Intermediate Dog
1st CH DEVMA TIME TRAVELLER (AI)
Almost 2 years old. Lovely type and well balanced body. Powerful masculine and well-shaped head and beautiful dark eyes. Well set ears. Excellent reach of neck and forechest. Strong bone. Excellent ribcage with level topline, well set tail. A strong and well-angulated rear. Moves very well with drive. Reserve Challenge Dog.
2nd TREEVIEW STEVE WITH A SLEEVE
1½ year old compact and strong dog with a masculine head, that could have a slightly longer muzzle. Well set ears and good length of neck. He could have more laid back shoulders. Good forechest but a bit too deep for the body. Strong bone and good topline. His underline would benefit from having less tuck-up. Well set tail and well-angulated rear. Moves well with a lot of drive.
3rd CH FANTAS BRAND TALK IT OUT AT LUNARS (IMP RUS)
1 year and 10 months old compact dog of lovely type. Well-shaped head with nice dark eyes. Well-set ears and a good reach of neck. Strong bone and good length of chest. Well set tail and a well-angulated rear. I would have liked him to show more uphill tendency and to have and stronger topline on the move.

3 years old. Well balanced, compact dog of lovely type. Powerful well-shaped head. Well set ears. Good reach of neck and well laid back shoulders. Strong bone, excellent forechest and ribcage. Good topline and nice short loin. Well angulated rear. A great mover with excellent reach and drive.

Challenge Dog and Reserve Best In Show.

2½ years old. Compact dog of nice type. Powerful, well-proportioned head with nice dark eyes. Well set ears and a good reach of neck. Excellent forechest and ribcage. He would benefit from a longer upper arm. Nice topline and well set tail. Well angulated rear and moves very well.
3rd SUP CH KARAKUSH CAKE BY THE OCEAN
4 years old. Compact and well-balanced dog. I would like him to have a softer expression and a longer muzzle. Well set ears and good length of neck. Strong bone and excellent ribcage. Well set and carried tail. Moves well with good reach and drive.

4 months old baby bitch, strong in type, feminine with a soft expression, dark eyes. Good length of neck and a well laid back shoulder. Strong bone and level topline. Well set tail and well-angulated rear. Moves well with drive.

4 months old, compact baby bitch, very feminine head with a soft and pleading expression, a little heavy in the front and a little too much forechest, good bone, and well sprung ribs, well set tail and a well angulated rear. Moves well.

4 months old, compact and feminine baby bitch. A little too chiselled under the eyes. Lovely neck and shoulders but a little too much forechest. Strong bone, level topline, well set tail and well angulated rear. Moves well.

10 months old, well balanced puppy with a feminine head and compact body. Nice head and well set ears. Would like the shoulder to have more lay back and upper arm to be slightly longer. Enough bone. Deep chest, but topline could be more level. Well set tail and a well-angulated rear. Moves well.
3rd HEBRIDEAN JUBILEE QUEEN
10 months old feminine puppy with good substance on the body, dark eyes, well set ears, would like shoulder to be more laid back, nice forechest and ribcage, a little long in loin, and tail could be set a little higher. Would benefit from more angulation in front and rear. Moves well.

1 year old feminine junior bitch with a nice head and dark eyes, well set ears, Could have a little more reach of neck. Nice forechest and ribcage that extends well back. Good topline and a well set tail. Would benefit from more angulation in front and rear. Moves very well.

1 year old feminine bitch and well balanced bitch. Nice head and dark eyes. Well set ears and a good reach of neck. Strong bone and good forechest and ribcage. Level topline and well angulated rear. A little shy on the day.

1½ year old compact bitch of nice type, with a feminine head and soft expression. Good reach of neck and strong bone. Excellent ribcage and topline. A well-set tail and a well angulated rear. Moves very well with drive.

1½ year old compact and well-constructed bitch. She would benefit from a cleaner and more feminine head. She has a good reach of neck, strong bone, and an excellent ribcage. Good topline and well angulated rear. She moves very well.

Almost 2 years old feminine bitch with good substance, a beautiful feminine head with dark eyes and a soft expression. Good reach of neck and good bone. Excellent ribcage and a level topline. A little long in loin and could benefit from more front and rear angulation. Moves well.
