Judges Critiques

It was a big honor for me to be selected to judge The Beagle Club of NSW 110th championship show. I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and was excited to get 80 beagles entered under me; it was the biggest entry in the last ten years with exhibitors travelling from other states as well. The show took place at the beautiful Orchard Hills grounds on a perfect day with weather very comfortable both for the exhibitors and the dogs. I was joking that the organizers had to pay big bucks to get such perfect weather!  The show committee team led by Sue Bownds did a great job putting together an enjoyable event that was run as a well-oiled machine. A big thank you to my stewardess Nellie Slade who was just impeccable directing the ring and making me feel very comfortable standing in the middle of it.

I was very pleased with the quality of the dogs exhibited. High quality was seen in all the classes, but I was especially pleased with excellence of baby and minor puppies in both sexes. That implies that the breed is in good hands and its future is bright!

I was delighted to see lots of very well built and elegant dogs in many classes. The stunning 3 ½ years old bitch that took Open class was impossible to deny as The Best in Show winner.  The Reserve BIS Winner was CC dog from Australian Bred class, who, to my surprise, turned out to be just 9 months old and had a minimal show exposure! No doubt, with maturing and more experience that puppy will have a bright show career, he is the one to watch in the future.  Reserve CC bitch came from Australian Bred class – lovely 4 ½ years old bitch similar in style to my BIS winner.  Reserve CC dog was the handsome Open class winner, a 9 ½ years old veteran.  So, my biggest winners represented the whole spectrum of ages presented to me.

My general impression about Australian stock is that beagles I had a privilege to judge, on average, were more up on legs compared to a beagle typically seen at the American show.  I don’t buy the theory that American beagles are short-legged because, due to the size disqualification imposed by the AKC breed standard, they must fit under the wicket and the best way for breeders to accomplish this is to produce hounds that are short on legs. I saw some short-legged entries in my ring in Australia and routinely see hounds that are well up on legs in America, it’s just about ratio of former to later in both countries.  The second important observation was bigger ground-covering gait seen in Australian hounds compared to American.  Part of it was attitude, training, and the way they were gaited (at higher speed) but, clearly, structure and overall balance play an important role in achieving a productive and efficient gait.  On the other hand, I saw that, on average, Australian beagles have less bone that average American counterpart.  Also, I did not see a lot of dense weatherproof coats that we call “correct” coats.  It may be related to the warmer weather in Australia or seasonal autumn shedding.  Additionally, I saw quite a few hounds with excessively long nails (Remember, the standard says: “Nails short”?) But overall, the entry was outstanding.

In conclusion, I want to express my gratitude to all the exhibitors who brought their wonderful hounds to show to me and who graciously accepted the outcome of my judging. I wish I could meet more of you in person at the little ringside after-show party. After spending almost two weeks in your country my wife Oksana and I discovered how awesome Australians are –open, kind and very friendly.  We just fell in love with your beautiful country and its amazing people. One day we will be back to this lovely land, to Down Under!

Baby Puppy Dog

  1. LUKARA ISEMAN

This puppy is a great mover seen from any angle. It has a very good front assembly: good shoulders, nice forechest, solid bone, cat feet. Beautiful head; topline is level when stacked and on the move. Very balanced puppy overall and very well presented.  He was my Baby Puppy in Show

  1. LUKARA DANGER ZONE

Loved his puppy head with pleading soft expression. Beautiful neck blends nicely into shoulders. Good angulation and prominent forechest. He has a good length of ribcage, sternum is long. Underline without tuck-up. Very similar in style to the class winner although a little bit more compact. Moving a little bit more restricted than the first place winner and slightly knuckles over when stacked and it was the reason he did not win this class – but it was very close!

  1. LUKARA GHOST RIDER

Another nice baby with solid bone, good forechest, very nice shoulder layback, sufficient length of sternum.  Like other winners in this class (who turned out to be his littermates!) he has a very pleasant head. Very promising baby.  However, when he is moving,  his topline is not ideal as he is higher in rear and has a little dip in the back but it, very likely, will be corrected as he matures.

Minor Puppy Dog

  1. UNEETOILE MR THURN THE PAGE

Lovely puppy representing an excellent breed type. Very balanced body with plenty of bone. He has a beautiful head with good ear set and dark eyes. I loved his overall balance, very nice shoulders and return of upper arm, forechest, nice rear angulation that matches that in front. His silhouette pleases your eyes when he is staked or gaits. Excellent puppy that ended up as my Minor Puppy in Show

Puppy Dog

  1. CLIFTOP SAY YOU WANT ME

This puppy has a good breed type. The head is good with correct muzzle to skull length ratio, but I would prefer more depths of muzzle. Sufficient amount of bone, good cat feet. Would like to see ribs extending more to the back. He holds his topline level on the move. Needs more socialization as he was not very confident on the table and on the ground.

Junior Dog

  1. BALDEV UNDER PRESSURE

I liked a lot about this dog. He has a very attractive head with good proportions, parallel planes and sufficient but not excessive stop. Shoulders are well laid back, front legs are straight and not tapering to the feet that are nice and compact.  Nice rear angulation and well-developed thighs. When moving he holds the topline level; he is true on down and back and easy going around. Won the class and Junior in Show because of his overall balance and was a contender for a CC award.

  1. KUNANYI SHOWMAN

This dog has nice shoulders and overall front assembly. Good lengths of legs, well knuckled up cat feet.  Topline is level when moving. Would prefer more bone and wider upper thigh.  A good mover from any angle. He has a bit coarser head compared to a class winner and quite noticeable ear fold.

  1. BRIALEY LIL BIT OF BOND

This dog has a nice attractive head with parallel planed and good depth of the muzzle and dark eyes. Good bone and cat feet. Of a smaller size with good body proportions.  When standing, he knuckles over when hand stacked; when moving, he has a dip in the back and excessive rounding in the loins.

Intermediate Dog

  1. TREEVIEW STEVE WITH A SLEEVE

Solid dog with good bone, nice feet, level topline and high tail set. Well laid back shoulders and a good return of upper arm. Chest is deep with ribbing extending well back.  Pretty clean head with square cut muzzle and dark pigmentation. Moves well going and coming and from the side, topline is maintained level on the move.

  1. CH DELMATIME TRAVELLER

Hight quality dog with good proportions of head, beautiful neck blending nicely into the shoulders. Good bend of stifle and short hocks. Very nice mover going around and clean on down and back.  He was very close to #14. Lost the class only because he occasionally knuckled over and made wrinkles.

  1. CH FANTA BRAND TALK IT OUT AT LUNARS

This smaller size dog is very typey when seen in profile, with a good pigmentation and nice solid bone and tight knuckled up cat feet.  He has rather upright shoulders and is toeing in when standing. His head, while plushy, could be more refined. Very nice moving around with a level topline, however is wide in front when coming. Was placed third of three in the class because of the front assembly.

Australian Bred Dog

  1. BEAGELEE MR PERFECT

Very handsome dog of moderate size and excellent breed type, long neck with a beautiful crest, well laid-back shoulders, compact. Good masculine head, yet clean. Good solid round bone, tight cat feet. Strong loin, topline on the move remains level. Easy effortless mover going around and very sound on down and back. If I wanted to be very picky, I would like to see more width of the thigh, but he was only nine months old and with the maturing will develop more muscles:  I would also prefer to see less dewlap. He ended up as my CC dog and Best In Show Runner-up.

  1. BALDEV BANDIT

Nice typey dog of the smaller size. Attractive head with pleasing and pleading expression and dark pigmentation. Good bone, compact tight cat feet. Moves well. Would like to see the ribcage extended further back.

  1. HOUNSLEY HEY THERE YOU

This blue dog is well built and has nice and substantial round bone that I liked a lot. Good shoulder layback, ribbing extending well back, short and muscular loin. Deep chest with a long sternum. He has a little bit wider than ideal back skull, otherwise head is nice with eyes dark for faded blue dog.  A little bit wide in front on coming but moves easy going around.

Open Dog

  1. SUP CH BEAGLYN FOREIGN ADVENTURE

9.5 years old veteran in a great shape. Very well balanced, up on legs. Shoulders are well laid-back and ribs are extended well back.  Nice proportions of the head with the muzzle equal in length to cranial part, well defined but not excessive stop, dark pigmentation. Moves well with firm and level topline. My Reserve CC Dog.

  1. SUP CH KARAKUSH CAKE BY THE OCEAN

Typey male of a moderate size, with good substance. Energetic movement with level top line and a good tail carriage. Very nice dog overall. Two things prevented him from winning the Open class: 1) There is a disbalance in his head as the cranial part is wider and the facial part is shorter and narrower than described in the breed standard. 2) When moving this dog demonstrated excessive high action in front.

  1. CULORGAIR LEGACY

Presents a good picture when stacked or on the move, especially going around. A little bit longer than the two dogs placed ahead of him but the length is coming from the rib cage, not from the loin. Straighter in shoulders than dogs that defeated him for class placements.

Baby Puppy Bitch

  1. TREEVIEW SCOOTING ALONG

Pretty head with good proportions and dark pigmentation, low ear set. Long neck, good shoulders and forechest, good cat feet. Level topline stacked and on the move. Effortless movement, happy disposition.

  1. LUNARS TALK LIKE THE RAIN

Pretty baby with good temperament and very well trained. Good angulation, front and rear, good length of neck, level topline, good set and carriage of the tail. Moves easily. While the head is very pretty it would fit better a male dog and for that reason she did not win this very competitive class.

  1. TREEVIEW FALLEN WARIER

Well put together puppy that is very similar in type to the class winner and as it turned out – her littermate sister. While the sisters share the same virtues, the class winner demonstrated better ground covering gait on the day of judging.

Minor Puppy Bitch

  1. GIBBGRAN GEISHA QEEN

Gorges, very typey puppy with very attractive outline. Level topline and great underline without tacking up. Beautifull head. Long neck blending smoothly into the shoulders. Very pretty picture going around. On going away, though, is a bit close in the rear with some signs of cow hocking.

Puppy Bitch

  1. CLARION COME DOLLY LETS DANCE

Pretty puppy, very well balanced with good angulations on both ends. Proper amount of bone in overall proportion with the body. Pretty head.  Beautiful long neck that nicely blends into the shoulders. Moves very well. Was standing out in her class and easily won Puppy in show and Best Puppy 6-12 Months.

  1. CLIFTOP SAY YOU NEED ME

Good puppy with adequate amount of bone. Level topline when stacked and a good tail set.  Good cat feet. I would prefer a longer and deeper muzzle. While she is deep enough in the chest I would prefer a longer rib cage.  Roaches back slightly when moving.

  1. HEBRIDEAN JUBILEE QUEEN

Bicolor bitch that has both nice length of legs and the depth of chest. The head is nice, but I would prefer more depth of muzzle. Shoulders are steeper than in her class competitors. She was happy to be in the ring and showed good strides, however, she had a slight deep in the back on the move, also she is close in rear on going.

Junior Bitch

  1. BALDEV KILLER QUEEN

Very nice and typey bitch with pretty head and good proportions of the body. Good and matching angulation on both sides, proper amount of forechest. Short hocks, nice bend of stifle. She holds her back very nicely on the move, however her tail is inclined at the root. On down and back is narrow in front and close in rear.

  1. DANDANGAGALE PEREGRINA PEARL

Red and white bitch with a bit longer cast. Soft expression, muzzle could be wider.  Angulation of the front matches that of the rear. Good mover. Would prefer a bit higher tail set.

  1. KUNANYI GRACEFUL SHOWGIRL

Pretty head with good length of muzzle and parallel planes. Good substance with round bone and compact cat feet.  Moderate and matching angulation on both ends. Very good mover going around and decent coming and going. Would like to see a slightly higher tail set.

Intermediate Bitch

  1. AUST CH TREEVIEW MARILYN MONROE

Very nice well-balanced bitch. Nice head with good proportions. Good front assembly (forechest, shoulder layback, return of upper arm).  Well knuckled up feet, hindquarter with well-developed muscles and angulation matching the front. Good mover – clean on down and back and efficient going around.  Ended up as my Intermediate In Show

  1. AUST CH JOHGRA DYNASTY

Smaller size bitch with a very attractive breed type. Beautiful neck smoothly blending into shoulders. Very nice round bone, tight cat feet. Back is level and firm on the move. Shows good reach and drive but was very close in the rear on the day of judging and it was the reason she did not win this class in a very close competition with the winner.

  1. HOUNDBROOK THENA

Good head with dark eyes and square-cut lip, nice length of neck. Matching angulations on both ends.  Good mover, quite sound on down and back and productive going around. Slightly toeing in and showed signs of knuckling over when hand stacked.

Australian Bred Bitch

  1. CH GIBBRAN GOODNES GRACIOUS ME.
Australian Bred Bitch Class Winner and Reserve CC Bitch.  Beautiful, typey, elegant bitch with correct proportions and balance. Gorgeous head that exemplify the breed standard. Good forechest, deep chest and ribs extended well back. Strong level topline and correct underline without tuck-up. Efficient and sound mover. Ended up as my Reserve CC Bitch to similar in type winner of the Open class.

  2. CH LUKARA BBS LEGACY

Nice, elegant bitch of slightly longer format. Pretty head with dark eyes and properly set ears. Good laid-back shoulders smoothly blending with the neck.   Good tail set and carriage. Good mover on down and back and as viewed from the side, although a little bit high in rear when moves. Also, I would prefer less tuck-up or, even better, less depth in the chest.

      3.CLIFTOP TALES OFA SOCERESS
Good substantial red and white bitch with solid round bones and nice cat feet. Head with full muzzle and soft expression. Level topline when stacked and on the move. Moving with good reach and drive, clean in front and a little bit close in rear. I would give her a little bit more length of legs.

Open Bitch

  1. SUP CH JOHGRA SUMMER IN PARIS

Stunning bitch with beautiful breed type and overall balance. Gorgeous head with square-cut muzzle that is equal in length to skull, dark eyes with pleading expression, and low ear set. Beautifull arched neck blends smoothly into well laid-back shoulders, good return of upper arm. Absolutely straight forelegs with round bone that are not tapering off to feet. Table level topline, when stacked and on the move, with tail set on high. Long ribbing with strong loin. Was absolutely true on down and back and demonstrated big ground covering gait on going around. Did not put a foot wrong and was handled to perfection.  She was my Best In Show and I would take her home in a heartbeat!

  1. CH DELMA DEFIANT

Substantial faded tricolor bitch with a pleasant plushy head of correct shape and low set ears. Good front assembly with well sloped shoulders and good forechest. Ribs well sprung and extended back, short strong loin. Level topline.  Good mover viewed from any angle.

  1. CH ALMANZOR FRANKS VERY MUCH

Moderate size bitch with nice pigmentation. Moderate angulation on both ends, good length of legs and tight cat feet. Moves well in any direction, with firm topline and good tail set and carriage. The chest is deep but could be extended back a little bit more.
