Judges Critique by Mrs Glenda Newick (Taiaut Beagles)

I would firstly like to thank the members of the Beagle Club of NSW for the invitation to judge the Bev James Memorial Show and 107th Championship Show. Bev was a good friend to both my husband Ross and I when I was involved in showing beagles throughout the 1970s and 1980s and will be fondly remembered for her devotion to beagles as well as her friendliness and sportsmanship. I am honoured to have judged at her memorial show.

I had a wonderful day and enjoyed myself immensely judging some lovely hounds. I consider the overall standard of the beagles to be very good and I am sure the winners would hold their own anywhere. Quality and breed type were very even throughout making for some very tough decisions in awarding the placings.

Movement was generally very good with most exhibits sound and there were no bad bites. Temperament was also good with most hounds happy and outgoing a major feature of our breed. As would be expected type has changed since I was an exhibitor and we are now seeing generally a more compact hound with longer backed hounds disappearing. However, something to watch in seeking a more compact dog is the ratio of length of rib to the length of loin. The ribs should extend well back with depth throughout allowing good room for the lungs so the dog is not herring-gutted and only showing a slight tuck up. As a rule of thumb the ribs should extend beyond halfway in the body and the loin should be no longer than 4 fingers in an adult average sized specimen. These proportions will allow the animal the lung capacity to go all day without becoming unduly fatigued.

My best in show winner is an excellent example of what I consider breeders should be trying to achieve in their breeding program.

Finally, I want to congratulate the winners and thank all exhibitors for the manner in which they accepted my decisions on the day. It was a great experience so thank you all.

Class 1 - Baby Puppy Dog

1ST BRIALEY LIL BIT OF BOND (AI)
Just the one exhibit. Nicely balanced puppy with good bone who moved out well, lovely dark eye and nose well developed flews, probably prefer a little longer reach of neck but with well angled shoulders and low hocks, level topline and moved with purpose and drive. Happy to award him Baby Puppy in Show.

Class 3 - Puppy Dog

1ST DEVMA TIME TRAVELLER (AI)
Well balanced dog with nice powerful head and low set ears, dark eye, good bone, prefer a more angled shoulder, level topline, ribbed well back and shorter loin, well turned stifle, moved well behind, good tail set.

2nd HOUNDBROOK CAPTAIN JACK
A striking tricolour dog with black saddle, dark eye, well arched neck and better shoulder angulation than the one above. Low set hocks but not as good a top line as the winner and not as well ribbed back.

Class 4 - Junior Dog

1ST CH LUNARS JIMMY NEUTRON
Only the one exhibit but a quality well balanced dog of good size. Nice bone but prefer tighter feet and prefer a darker eye, well set ears with a lovely head with a pleasing expression, lovely reach of neck flowing into well angled shoulders, nice compact dog, square, ribs the correct proportion to the loin although perhaps prefer a bit less tuck up to the underline, low set hocks, well set on tail, moved out well around the ring A very nice dog of good type.

Class 5 - Intermediate Dog

1ST CH GIBBGRAN QEENS COUNSEL
A lovely well balanced dog of good size, beautiful outgoing movement, powerful head with good depth of muzzle, dark eye, well set ears, lovely soft expression, lovely length of neck well arched flowing into good shoulders set well back, good bone, lovely level underline not herring gutted at all, possibly prefer slightly tighter feet, well turned stifle with low set hocks. Overall an absolute top quality dog who moved well. CHALLENGE DOG, RUNNER UP TO BEST IN SHOW & INTERMEDIATE IN SHOW

2ND CLIFTOP BLAME IT ON ME
A slightly lighter eye than the one in front, but moved well, perhaps a little short in upper arm, good neck, good underline, nice topline lovely thick tail well set from a level topline, low hocks moved well.

3RD CH ALMANZOR WIND ME UP WATCHME GO(AI)
Another nice dog, slightly lighter eye and I would prefer a more powerful head and a longer neck, a little bit short in length of ribcage, but a nice balanced dog and square with good tail set on well.

Class 10 - Australian Bred Dog

This was a very strong class and a pleasure to judge.

1ST CH DEVMA THE DIPLOMAT
A dog well up to size but a nice outline, moved out well, a nice shaped head but prefer a tighter eye showing a little bit of the underside of his eye, good ears set well and framing his head, good front, feet well shaped although prefer them a little a bit tighter but still a well shaped foot. Good bone, nice flowing neck into his shoulders, prominent prosternum, reasonable underline and well ribbed, back, nice low hock, well set tail.

2ND HOUNSLEY HEY THERE YOU
A blue tricolour, lovely compact dog, He didnt have quite the reach and drive on the move of one above but a lovely head with a soft expression, well shaped ears well set, good bone, nice tail well set.

3RD CH ARIAHGROVE SECRET EDITION
A tan and white dog seven years old and perhaps losing a little muscle tone but still a very nice dog, beautiful head loved his head with a lovely dark eye correct proportions between muzzle and skull and well set long ears, good neck, level topline, good underline, low set hocks, well set tail, overall a nicely balanced dog.

Class 11 Open Dog

Another lovely class with all dogs sound on the out and back but perhaps a little more reach and drive on the side view for some exhibits.

1ST SUP CH BEAGLYN FOREIGN ADVENTURE (AI)
First an older dog 8 ½ but holding his age very well, beautifully balanced, compact and square with a lovely head and good reach of neck, dark eye and mild appealing expression, good front, good bone, feet perhaps could be a little bit tighter but a good shape and at his age still quite good, level topline, good underline, lowset hocks and well set tail. He moved well around the ring. RESERVE CHALLENGE DOG

2ND CH VAGABOND JACKSON
A smaller dog and a very hard decision very close up to number one, perhaps prefer a slightly longer leg in comparison to body depth but well angulated with good neck, nice head with lovely low set ear, didn’t hold his topline as well on the move as one above and tail set perhaps a little low.

CH KARAKUSH FORCE OF BLACK (IMP NZ)
A lovely compact dog perhaps a little too compact as I would prefer a slightly longer ribcage, nice head with a nice dark eye, good reach of neck, well turned stifle, low set hocks, tail perhaps set a little too high leading to higher carriage, good feet.

Class 2A Minor Puppy Bitch

1ST HOUNDBROOK THENA
Just the one exhibit and a beautifully dark coloured tricolour, nice outline, feminine head with lovely dark eye and dark eyelashes and eye rims, good length of ear well set, nice front and good bone, tight feet, well ribbed back which was something lacking in some of the exhibits, low set hocks, good topline, good thick tail set and carried well, a little naughty on the move but moved well. BEST MINOR PUPPY IN SHOW AND BEST PUPPY 6-12 MONTHS

Class 3A Puppy Bitch

1ST CLIFTOP TALES OF FANTASIA
Overall showed the most quality and breed type. A superior true mover out and back with reach and drive on the side, feminine head with a good reach of neck, compact body with a nice underline, level topline and well set on tail, she moved well around the ring. BEST PUPPY IN SHOW

2ND HOUNDBROOK GISELLE
Lovely feminine head with a nice dark eye and long ears set on well, a good reach of neck, good coat and probably the best feet of the class, not as level underline as I would like, loin a bit tucked up and perhaps slightly short in the upper arm. Low set hocks. Not as sound fore and aft on the move as I would like.

3RD CLIFTOP TALES OF ZATANNA
Not as balanced overall as the ones above but with low set hocks and a good topline, not as sound on the move fore and aft as the winner.

Class 4A - Junior Bitch

1ST BRIALEY OH SO POSH
A nice well balanced bitch, compact with good reach of neck, a nice feminine head with a dark eye and well set ears, well angulated, good topline, well turned stifle, low set hock, ribbed well back, and showing nice underline, she moved true fore and aft coming and going and moved well around the ring. RESERVE CHALLENGE BITCH AND BEST JUNIOR IN SHOW

2ND CH LUNARS ROXY ROCKET
Also a nice well balanced bitch, her head perhaps a little bit masculine not as nice a feminine expression of the one above, lovely ears low set, with a lovely long arched neck reaching into well angulated shoulders and a good balance between her body and her legs, prefer slightly more depth to her rib cage but she did have good proportions, well set tail showing good brush, level topline, not as true fore and aft on the move as the winner.

3rd CLIFTOP TALES OFA SORCERESS
A nice tan and white bitch with a feminine head with a lovely length of ear, a nice reach of neck and well set tail, well ribbed back showing the really correct proportions with a long ribcage and short loin but she didn’t hold her topline on the move as well and perhaps didn’t have the angulation of the ones above. Also, her feet could have been tighter and they were a little flat.

Class 5A - Intermediate Bitch

1ST JOHGRA CATCH THE WIND
A well presented beagle bitch feminine with a beautiful soft expression, prefer a slightly longer muzzle but her overall expression and head were feminine and lovely, nice dark eye beautiful ears well set, nice straight front, well boned right down to her tight feet, well arched neck and good shoulders, well angulated, good underline, perhaps could have been ribbed a little bit further back but a good topline, well set tail, well angulated hindquarter, tail showing good brush.

2ND DANDANGADALE SHE WALKSON WATER (AI)
Also moved well but not as true fore and aft as the one above, she had a good well shaped head with nicely shaped eyes dark enough although her expression was not as soft as the one above, nice neck with a good arch, perhaps a slightly short upper arm but still acceptable, feet not as good as the one above, she had a well set tail.

3RD CH KARAKUSH DELICIOUS (AI)
A well angulated bitch with a little bit of a harsh expression with a darker eye which just gave her not quite the soft expression of the winner. Her muzzle could have been a little bit deeper and longer in proportion to her skull, lovely long neck, I would have preferred more depth of rib stretching well back, showing her good angulation she moved with drive around the ring and has a good thick tail carried well. She did lose her topline a little on the move and was not as true fore and aft as the winner.

Class 10A - Australian Bred Bitch

1st CH VAGABOND PIPPAWAY
A tan and white, compact slightly smaller hound than others presented today, nice outline well balanced with a good underline which is something I was looking for on the day, head in correct proportions, well pigmented for tan and white with nose well filled in although perhaps a slightly darker eye preferred, good length of neck and level topline, nice straight front perhaps prefer a little more spring in toes but she had tight feet, she moved well perhaps a little close behind but true fore and aft and she moved nicely around the ring. BEST AUSTRALIAN BRED IN SHOW

2nd ARIAHGROVE OOPS IM IN TROUBLE
A typey bitch with a nice head with good proportions, good depth of muzzle, correct ear set and nice dark eye. Good neck. Not as good a forechest/prosternum as the winner and I would prefer a slightly longer fore arm so not the angulation of the one above, good topline, she also moved nicely around the ring.

3RD DEVMA DEFIANT
Her head showed a pleasing expression with a nice reach of neck, nice level topline and well set tail. However, her shoulders were a little loose and not as well constructed as ones above.

Class 11A - Open Bitch

Another high quality class which was a pleasure to judge

1ST JOHGRA SUMMER IN PARIS
A beautiful feminine well balanced bitch who oozed quality, lovely feminine head with soft expression, good dark eye, good depth of muzzle, correct proportions between muzzle and skull, good well defined stop, good angulation, good outline with lovely neck, well constructed shoulders and good forechest, good bone, level topline, well set tail, lovely correct underline, well turned stifle and low set hocks, moved well fore and aft and around the ring. Very happy to award her top honours. CHALLENGE BITCH AND BEST EXHIBIT IN SHOW BEST OPEN IN SHOW

2ND CH GIBBGRAN GOODNES GRACIOUS ME
Another lovely well balanced bitch. Head not quite as nice as one above but with nice eye and dark mascara around the eye, muzzle not as much depth as winner, good neck, nice shoulders, good underline, low set hocks, tail with good brush, moved well around the ring, perhaps not the bone or substance of the one above,

3RD CH LUNARS WHENU WISH UPON A STAR (AI)
A very compact bitch, nice feminine head with a pleasing expression, well angulated, perhaps prefer slightly more ribbed back moved well fore and aft nice well set tail.

Class 18A - Neuter Bitch

1ST CH DANANGADALE KIWI SPIRIT (IID)
A typey beagle bitch of good size and showing quality. Nice head with dark eye and well set ears of good length, Compact with a good outline with long neck and showing good angulation. Ideally a more level topline preferred. BEST NEUTER IN SHOW
