BEAGLE CLUB OF NSW IN 108TH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW SUNDAY April 17, 2022
I would first like to thank the committee for the honour of inviting me to judge this show. Beagles have always held a special place in my heart having had them in my late teens/early 20’s then through my close friend Noelene Hughes with Penavon Beagles. To the exhibitors, thank you so much for entering your beautiful dogs under me, I was certainly spoiled for choice in many classes. It was pleasing to see that you have very good strength in your bitches, which bodes well for the future of the breed. Nearly every dog was presented in very good condition, with great coats, and healthy disposition, although some could have better muscle tone. A few watchouts were some dogs where the pastern did not exist – yes, the bone should go down to the feet, but being a breed that has to endure various terrain to perform its function, it is imperative that they have some flexibility of pastern to ensure they don’t break down. Another was eye colour, although I did not heavily penalize some, as with being a very bright day, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Nothing completes the beautiful expression of a Beagle than a dark eye, correct earset and ensuring a clean head of fair length so please watch some of the shorter muzzles and skulls sneaking in.
I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment and congratulate you all on a fabulously run show and fabulous sportsmanship.

Baby Puppy Dog
1st BRIALEY LIL BIT OF BOND (AI)
Chunky wee tri colour baby boy, lots of bone, lovely eye, good tail set, a bit long in back at this stage, hopefully as he grows, he will come up on leg more to help balance him out.
Puppy Dog
1st DEVMA TIME TRAVELLER (AI)
Tri male puppy, beautiful head with soft melting expression. Smooth neck into shoulder to tail set, although tended to stack a little A framed. Prefer a little shorter in back, although still young and could balance up more as he grows and develops. Moves well with great outgoing temperament.
2nd HOUNDBROOK CAPTAIN JACK
Tri male puppy full of temperament. Head balanced with lovely dark eye, prefer a little more length in both skull and foreface, which could come as he grows. Lovely short back and topline that could be further improved with a little more length of neck and better front angulation. This would also improve his front movement which is a little high stepping. Lovely hammy hindquarters for a youngster. Still young with a lot of development to go.
Junior Dog
1st CH LUNARS JIMMY NEUTRON
17mth young tri male with beautiful head and expression. Correct proportions of length of skull and foreface. Beautiful neck and angulation fore and aft. Neck flows harmoniously into a strong topline and tail set, very good hindquarters with short hocks. Sound moving youngster covering the ground well. Needs to tighten a little in front which will come as he matures. A young dog with a huge amount of promise and would love to see him once he is fully mature. Pleased to award him RDCC
Intermediate Dog
1st CH GIBBGRAN QEENS COUNSEL
Super 18month tri male. Beautiful head with dark eye and soft melting expression. Correct length of neck flowing into beautiful shoulders and short strong back finishing with correct tail set. Lovely tight feet. Good ribbing that is carried back to a short strong loin. Loved his width behind on the stack with great muscle formation and strong thighs and hocks. Moved very well, sound coming and going. Pleased to award him DCC
2nd CH ALMANZOR WINDME UP WATCHME GO (AI)
Another nice male with lovely head and expression. Good neck into shoulder which could be improved with a little more angulation and little more flexibility of pastern. Well ribbed back with good hammy hindquarters. Moves well.

Australian Bred Dog
1st AUST CH ARIAHGROVE SECRET EDITION
Lovely tan and white male with good head, lovely eye with soft expression. Good neck into shoulder. Lovely feet. Smooth topline and tailset, would perhaps prefer a little shorter in back. A little soft in condition which shows on the move coming and going, but covers the ground well in profile.
2nd CH DEVMA THE DIPLOMAT
Good head that could perhaps be a little stronger and masculine. Good compact body that flows well. Moderate angulation, although could do with more angulation in pastern which was a little upright. Could be improved with a little more angulation behind and musculation. Tail set slightly lower than desired. Moves well.
3rd DANDANGADALE RICKY ZOOM
Nice wee dog that I would just prefer a little more of all over. Nice head that could be improved with a little more depth in muzzle to balance the look and a slightly darker eye. Good condition with a beautiful coat and gleam.
Open Dog
1st SUP CH BEAGLYN FOREIGN ADVENTURE (AI)
Beautiful tri male with lovely head and expression complimented by his beautiful dark eye blended into his gorgeous, frosted face. In very good condition for his 8 years. Good strong topline and hindquarters which do him well on the move. Lovely boy.
2nd CH VAGABOND JACKSON
Another tri male. Nice head and expression, however, would prefer him a little more masculine. Nice flow from neck into shoulder. Sadly, lacking a little in length of front leg which gives the illusion of being longer than he would be otherwise. Moves well holding his topline well. Overall, a nice boy.
BITCHES
Minor Puppy Bitch
1st HOUNDBROOK THENA
Overall nice moderate young lady that has it all there and just needs it to come. Lovely head and expression, a little lighter in eye than I prefer that may blend better as her colour lightens. Good body albeit a little shorter in front leg- which could come as she grows to help balance her proportions. Super temperament.
Puppy Bitch
1st HOUNDBROOK GISELLE
Lovely tri bitch, beautiful head and expression with balanced length of skull and foreface. Good length of neck complimented with correct front angulation and tight feet. Good topline and underline but would prefer a slightly better tail set. Moves well but still needs to settle as she matures.
2nd CLIFTOP TALES OF ZATANNA
Another lovely wee girl. Good head but would prefer a little softer expression. Overall, well put together with moderate angulation and tight feet. Has a good strong topline. Moves well for a puppy.
3rd CLIFTOP TALES OF FANTASIA
Very similar to 2nd placegetter but do prefer her expression. Lovely wee girl just needs a little more angulation in comparison to the 1st and 2nd placegetter. Moves well.
Junior Bitch
1st CH LUNARS ROXY ROCKET
Beautiful young 17mth old bitch with gorgeous head and expression. Correct proportions of length of skull and foreface. Beautiful neck and angulation fore and aft. Neck flows harmoniously into a strong topline and tail set, complimented with a super underline. Good hindquarters with short hocks. Moves well with ground covering movement. She has a huge amount of promise once she is fully mature and developed like her brother. Lost to the male for JIS simply splitting hairs preferring his head proportions.
2nd CLIFTOP TALES OF A SORCERESS
Lovely tan and white girl with beautiful head and expression, compact body with strong topline and tight feet. Sadly, dropped her tail in the ring.
3rd BRIALEY OH SO POSH
Tri bitch with nice head and expression although head could be stronger in foreface. Moderate angulation and could do with more spring of pastern. A little more ‘covered’ than the other bitches, which spoiled her underline. Tail set could be better as tended to flag her tail on the move.
Intermediate Bitch
1st CH KARAKUSH DELICIOUS (AI)
Lovely square bitch with beautiful outline, elegant neck into shoulder, finished with a super tail set coming off the topline perfectly. Well balanced head with gorgeous expression. Good hindquarters with short hocks. Moves well in profile, prefer a little tighter in front. In super condition
2nd JOHGRA CATCH THE WIND
Another lovely bitch with good outline, elegant neck into shoulder to a super tail set. Prefer a little more spring in pastern. Moves well but not quite the ground covering movement of the class winner.
3rd KISLEV COMING YOUR WAY
Another nice young girl that unfortunately was not doing herself any justice today. Nice head and expression and saw moments of brilliance when she co-operated with her handler.
Australian Bred Bitch
1st ARIAHGROVE OOPS IM IN TROUBLE
Lovely bitch with exquisite head proportions, expression and dark eye. Good topline and tail set. Could do with a little more length of leg to balance her squareness. A little soft after obviously having had a litter recently which has also affected the ability to judge her underline. Very good moving bitch that is also sound coming and going.
2nd DEVMA DEFIANT
Lovely girl with very good head properties and lovely expression. Good neck into shoulder, however very little spring or flexibility in pastern making her look very upright which in turn affects her ability to cover the ground on the move. Good body proportions with level topline and good tail set.
3rd CH VAGABOND PIPPAWAY
Another lovely girl unfortunately carrying a bit too much weight which in turn makes her look a little thick and chunky and hides her assets. Has a lovely head and moderate overall.
Open Bitch
1st SUP CH JOHGRA SUMMER IN PARIS
This class was exceptional, and I was very spoiled for choice with such quality. My winner captured my eye as soon as she stepped foot in the ring. At only 2 ½ years of age, she definitely has a huge future ahead of her. Loved her well balanced head and expression with beautiful dark eyes and correct eye shape. Her body flowed from her elegant but strong neck into correctly angulated shoulders, good length of ribbing to a short strong loin and correctly set tail that held perfectly on the move. Tight feet and good short nails. Where she excelled was her incredible ground covering movement with precision soundness coming and going. I can imagine her running in the fields all day. I was honoured to award her BCC and ultimately BIS
2nd CH GIBBGRAN GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME
Another super quality bitch with all the qualities of the class winner. I can easily repeat the critique above for this bitch too - Beautiful head and expression with beautiful dark eyes and correct eye shape. Her body flowed from her elegant but strong neck into correctly angulated shoulders, good length of ribbing to a short strong loin and correctly set tail that held perfectly on the move. Tight feet and good short nails. Excellent ground covering movement with precision soundness coming and going. Essentially all it came down to splitting very fine hairs to separate these bitches.
3rd CH LUNARS WHENU WISH UPON A STAR (AI)
What can I say, yet another super quality bitch 3 years of age, again one can repeat the critique of the winner for this bitch. Beautiful head and expression with lovely dark eyes and correct eye shape. Correct compact body flowing from her elegant neck into correctly angulated shoulders, good length of ribbing to a short strong loin and correctly set tail that held perfectly on the move. Tight feet and good short nails. Very good ground covering movement with soundness coming and going. This class could have gone any way and I was super honoured, as I said, to have had such beautiful bitches shown under me.
