A Guideline To Purchasing A Border Collie

So how do you find an ethical breeder?

  1. Every breeder has to have a BIN (Breeder Identification Number). This number can be verified by logging into the QLD Dog Breeder Register.
It is also preferable that the breeder be registered with the ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council) through thier state member body eg. Dogs Queensland (CCC(Q)). The ANKC is the only true registry that is able to provide Certified Pedigree certificates for purebred dogs and breeders are bound by a strict Code of Ethics.

  2. Research the breeder. 'BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BREEDER'.
Check out websites/ facebook/ Instagram and read testimonials and reviews. Build a rapport with the breeder and visit thier grounds/ property observing the hygiene and temperament of breeding/ other dogs.

  3. RESEARCH the breed you are interested in! Introduce yourself/family to the breeder and share with them why you would like a Border Collie as a companion.

  4. Check that the breeder includes vet checks, microchipping, vaccinations and worming, as all puppies sold, MUST BE MICROCIPPED and VACCINATED between 6-8 weeks of age, before leaving their breeder.

  5. Ask the breeder if they have DNA tested and profiled their breeding dogs. Border Collies like any other breed are susceptible to genetic faults and you want to make sure they are not breeding carrrier to carrier or any affected dogs.

  6. Some breeders provide HIP and ELBOW scores for thier dogs. This is great- however hip dysplasia is multifaceted and the parents hip and elbow scores aren't always indicative of offspring scores. If you do not take care with your new puppy and thier safe play, weight and other environmental factors, HD could occur incidently with no fault to the pups genetic make-up.

  7. Your puppy should have a full VET CHECK before being released, with certified proof. The certificate will include important details encompassing worming schedules, vaccination/s administration and microchip number along with any issues a puppy may have for example heart murmur, overbite or umbilicus hernia etc.

  8. It is ANKC regulation, that NO puppy will be sold before they are 8 weeks of age.

Lastly... your breeder should offer you a LIFETIME of support for your puppy.
