What to Look for in a Responsible Dog Breeder

Choosing the right breeder is one of the most important steps in welcoming a new dog into your life. A responsible breeder prioritises the health, temperament, and well-being of their dogs above all else. Look for breeders who:

  • Emphasize health testing – They screen their breeding dogs for genetic conditions and provide health clearances.

  • Raise healthy well-socialized puppies – Breeders should raise healthy, happy puppies.The puppies should also be clean, well conditioned, lively and friendly. Puppies should be exposed to everyday sights, sounds, and handling to help them adjust easily to family life.

  • Offer transparency – A reputable breeder welcomes your questions, shares veterinary records, and allows you to meet the puppies’ parents.

  • Provide lifelong support – Responsible breeders remain a resource for you throughout your dog’s life and will take back a puppy if circumstances change.

  • Demonstrate ethical practices – They limit the number of litters, avoid overbreeding, and ensure their dogs live in clean, loving environments.

  • Registered Breeder - Check for registered breeder on reputable web pages such as Dogs Australia, Dogz Online, Dogs Queensland, Dogs NSW, Dogs Victoria, Dogs ACT, Dogs SA, Dogs West (WA), Dogs Tasmania and Dogs NT.

By choosing a breeder who upholds these standards, you’re not only giving your future dog the best start in life—you’re also supporting the ethical and responsible care of the breed you love.

Puppy Scammers

Sadly it has become more apparent that puppy scammers are out there in large numbers scamming thousands of dollars from unsuspecting, prospective and often naive people each month.

It is understood that as soon as one scammer site is reported and shut down, another site opens.

If you are seeking a puppy please be mindful and on guard when contacting people advertising puppies for sale. The scam sites have wonderful photos of delightful puppies and paint glowing pictures to the uninitiated, unsuspecting potential puppy owner, particularly on such sites as Gumtree.

Please contact a Dogs Australia affiliated breed club who have people who can provide guidance and direct them to accredited breeders. Ask questions, speak to people - not just send texts or emails.

Dogs Australia members have an obligation as responsible dog lovers and breeders to guide and educate prospective puppy owners in how to tell the difference between a scammer (who in reality is a criminal) and a registered breeder.

Importantly, if you become aware of a scammer you can report them.
