Set up for success

Thank you for purchasing one of our little babies.

Now is the time to bond with your puppy and guide him or her into being a stable, happy and enjoyable addition to your family.

The first weeks after taking your puppy home are seen as the 'critical socialisation period' approximately between 3-17 weeks of age. While your puppy has been with us, they have been held regularly, played with, meet other members of the family and socialised with our other dogs. You should start socialising your puppy as soon as you bring them home. This also should be done in a safe disease free envioronment, until your puppy has had all it's vaccinations.

For some great tips on how to socialise your puppy look at this link. https://beacondogtraining.com.au/puppy-socialisation

       Wormimg, vaccinations and worming information

Your puppy has been wormed at 2,4, 6, and 8 weeks, and will need worming again at 12 weeks. We use Drontal liquid for small baby puppies. At 8 weeks of age we start them on Advocate.  We use Advocate on our adults for a flea and worm treatment, this formula also covers heartworm. We have been using this product for almost 20yrs without any issues. We have introduced Milbemax for a more thorough worm treatment as it does more variety of intestinal worms. See the information below for doses and frequency.

He/She was vaccinated and micro-chipped at 6 weeks. He/She will need another puppy vaccination around 12 weeks then again around 16 weeks, check the vet passbook for recommended date. You will recieve a email for microchip transfer from Central Animal Records to change the ownership details. There is also a small fee applied. You can do this also on-line

Advocate is good for heartworm, fleas and most worms,

it however does not cover tick or tape worm.

Milbemax is a complete intestinal worm preventative medication. It                                                   does not cover heartworm though.

DNA and Pedigree papers

Not all registries are able to provide you with the actual birth certificate of your new puppy. At Dogs Qld we do, in fact we MUST. The link gives you more information on why a pedigree paper is important.  https://www.dogsaustralia.org.au/getting-a-dog/importance-of-pedigree-papers/#:~:text=Pedigree%20papers%20are%20proof%20that,five%20generations%20back%20or%20more

Your Puppy Information Pack

Your puppy pack is a collection of items that include:

Yor puppies portfolio consists of doccumentation such as; Vaccination Certificate, Microchip information, Pedigree Information (Sometimes sent via mail), and DNA information (sometimes sent via mail). Some goodies from Blackhawk.

Your puppy has been well feed (three times a day) and introduced to meals that are mainly raw (chicken, turkey and beef mince) and puppy based ( commercial wet food) mixed together. Chicken necks are a good starter in dental hygiene, and your puppy has had these undersupervision. Good size meaty bones are also a good start to dental hygiene, just make sure they are big enough NOT to swallow. We have included some wet food for you to use and mix with some raw mince. (Freighted pups do not recieve frozen goods)

Your puppy has also been given dry food to nibble on when they are 'peckish'. Its good to have this out as it can prevent your puppy having a sugar drop. They may be able to eat the dry food without soaking to soften it once your puppy goes home. When you change to a adult type buiscut do it gradually over a week, this helps the pup to adjust to a change in diet and prevents bloat and other issues.

Grooming

Your puppy should start now, the earlier the better. We have clipped your puppies nails    from the age of 2 weeks and continue to do so until they leave. Included is a small pair    of clippers.

Your puppy has been bathed in Fido's puppy shampoo, it is a nice smelling shampoo      and is suitable for bathing puppies in. Remember to make this a possitive experience      for you baby and not to stress them to much, just a gentle rub down with loads of     praise after you have dryed them off.

Dental care for your puppy

We have also been brushing your puppies’ teeth with a baby soft toothbrush, you can continue to do this as he/she should be used to it. I have a a video on our page to show you how we have done it. It doesn’t need to be for long, just consistently if you want to avoid $1000s in vet bills. Here is a link to show you how to start. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/BMDzmdSYNlk

We recommend starting on a dental plan and using a good toothpaste. We use C.E.T. toothpaste on our dogs teeth. Check the link for ordering https://us.virbac.com/home/our-products/pagecontent/product-selector/cet-enzymatic-toothpaste-dog-cat.html

     Lead training

It is always a bit stressfull when it comes to puppies, we don't want to pull or tug on the lead.  We recommend that under supervision your puppy just wears a collar and lead, getting used to having it around the neck first. Then using treats guide them around so they follow the treat, gradually picking up the lead and guiding the pup while holding the lead. Making it fun and an excitable time will make it more positive for your puppy. You only need a few minutes at a time.

Most important

Chihuahuas are mainly an indoor dog, they love a cuddle and to be on your lap. They think they are human! Remember to watch out for your puppy running around, don't let little children pick them up unsupervised, and they are easily hurt by feet, they can get under your feet so quickly!

Any questions, you can email us at http://[email protected]. We would love you to keep in contact and send us a photo from time to time. You can send us feedback through our website at www.chi-n-mighty.com . Enjoy your newest family member!
