After much research and support from Basset Griffon Vendeen clubs around the world, and led by the UK Basset Griffon Vendeen Club, the first DNA test for POAG ( Primary Open Angle Glaucoma) for Petir Basset Griffon Vendeens became available.

POAG was a terrible  condition that led to the PBGV becoming blind at an early age.

The DNA test was an exciting breakthrough and the first tests became available at Crufts 2015. Since that time PBGVs from around the world have been tested and continue to be tested for POAG.

There are three gradings. They are:

Clear

Carrier

Affected.

Clear dogs do not carry the gene and will never be affected or produce blindness

Carrier dogs will not be personally affected but carry the gene for POAG

Affected dogs carry the gene and will ultimately go blind

BREEDING PROTOCOLS

Clear to Clear will give all clear

Clear to carrier will be 50% carrier 50% clear

Clear to affected ( though you probably would not do this) will give you all Carriers."

The breeding protocols that have been developed mean that it is possible that in the future no PBGV will ever go blind from this condition if all breeders follow the protocols
