Registered Breeders v Backyard Breeders

As Secretary of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of NSW, I have, during the past few weeks been inundated with Jack Russell Puppy enquiries.
A few from seriously interested people and many from people who have seen a picture and now want one! Today !

Well bred Jack Russell puppies are not readily available BUT here in Australia. we have Breed Clubs who are all willing to give help and advice to suitable , prospective owners.

Puppies will always be available on ‘Public Sites’ usually with a very expensive price tag! BUT before you think about buying one please PM me and I can provide you with:

* General Information on the breed and the contact details of the four clubs.
* Tips for buying a puppy.
* Dogs NSW/ Dogs Vic - full Members that have agreed to the Association’s ‘ Code Of Ethics’.
* An article explaining what ‘ Well Bred’ actually means!

I haven’t ever dealt with a query or concern from anyone that has followed the our advice BECAUSE the breeder has provided that service.
However , I often am expected to help distraught puppy owners that have faced extortionate vets bills with conditions that could have been prevented.

TAKE ADVICE BEFORE YOU BUY!

To help those who are looking to buy a puppy.

Reputable Registered Breeder Vs Backyard Breeder

In recent times, puppy enquiries have multiplied and JRTCV committee and JRTCNSW thought it an appropriate time to remind you all of the things to keep in mind when purchasing a puppy.

The first thing to consider, is the commitment required when introducing a puppy to your home. You may have the time now, however, this also raises the question of how you will socialise your puppy at this time. Not forgettting that having a dog is a 10-15 year commitment and you may not always have the time you have now.

That being said, finding a suitable breeder can be a battle in itself. The first thing to establish is the difference between a reputable registered breeder and a backyard breeder (BYB).

A reputable registered breeder is a member of their Australian National Kennel Council affiliated state body ie. Dogs NSW (this is different to Companion Animal registration which applies to everyone), being a member of this association means that Registered breeders have to follow a Code Of Ethics. Registered Breeders breed dogs for the betterment of the breed, taking into consideration results of health testing, temperament and breed traits to improve the breed with each litter. Registered breeders often make very little money from their puppies. When you consider health testing and checks, stud and whelping costs along with money and time associated with raising a litter along with years spent learning about the breed.

A registered breeder will provide you with Dogs NSW pedigree registration papers (main {blue} or limited {orange} register), health certification from their veterinarian along with vaccination card and microchip certificate, DNA profile of both parents and a lifetime of advice and support for your puppy.

In NSW expect to pay $1,500 to $2,500 for a Dogs NSW registered puppy with pedigree papers. All breeders must supply the pedigree papers with the puppy. Should you want a pup to show, or do performance sports, expect yo pay more.

Registered breeders often do not need to advertise their litters as they receive enquiries from people who have researched the breed. If required, they may post a litter notification on Dogzonline.

A BYB on the other hand breed so-called purebreds dogs for the purpose of making money. They do not health test their breeding stock nor take into consideration their history and ancestry. They do not belong to any registered body for which they are required to abide by a code of ethics. BYB’s will often have numerous puppies available at inflated prices and do not screen prospective buyers as they do not necessarily care who they sell puppies to. They often advertise on Gumtree or the Trading Post.

In conclusion, it is important to do your research, ask breeders as many questions as possible and view relevant paperwork before agreeing to purchase a puppy.
