FIRST 24 HOURS

The first 24 hours in a new home can be a very exciting and potentially overwhelming time for a new puppy.  Here are some things you can expect and do to make the transition as smooth as possible.

EXPLORING

Exploring their new environment: When you first bring your puppy home, they will likely spend some time exploring their new surroundings.  They may sniff around, investigate new objects, and try to get comfortable.

EATING and DRINKING

Your puppy may be too excited or nervous to eat or drink at first, but it’s important to make sure they have access to fresh water and a healthy meal.  Stick to the same food they were eating before, at least initially, to avoid upsetting their stomach.

BONDING

The first 24 hours is an important time for bonding with your new puppy.  Spend time playing with them, petting them, talking to them in a calm & reassuring voice.  This will help them to feel safe and secure in their new home.

NEW FAMILY

Your puppy will likely be very curious about the people in their new home.  Make sure to introduce them to everyone in a calm and controlled manner and let them approach people on their own terms.

SETTLING IN

Your puppy may want to curl up in a cozy spot and rest for a while as they get used to their new home.  Make sure they have a comfortable bed or crate to rest in and provide them with plenty of toys and treats to keep them entertained.

REMEMBER

Remember, it’s normal for your new puppy to be a little nervous or anxious in their new homes at first.  Be patient and gentle with them and give them plenty of love and attention as they adjust to their new surroundingsClick each link to view larger photo.
