MYDRM STANDARD POODLES

Welcome to Mydrm Poodles.  I grew up with greyhounds - the racing kind.  I walked many a mile with my father, exercising and training the dogs.  I was always strangely attracted to the fawn and black and white dogs.  I developed an amazing bond with a fawn dog, my father sold to my extreme distress.  I called him "Fred".  When his buyers registered him, he was called RED FRED.

Years later, my mother got herself a poodle.  At the time, I didn't understand why she would get a poodle.  It wasn't until she had puppies of her own and there was 'fawn' puppy that I started to understand the attraction of the 'poodle'.  Zeus, an apricot standard poodle, became my constant companion. I learned to show and groom with him and he was loving and protective of my children when they were born.   It would be over 14 years later - after his passing - that I contemplated breeding.   I went in search of another apricot standard poodle and found Australia came up short.  My search led me to Europe, where I not only found apricot poodles but red ones too.  So began a passion to promote and show red and apricot standard poodles.

While colour is very important to me, the health of the puppies is of much greater importance.

Over the years we have used different laboraties for our testing, and unfortunately, there are still some health issues that genetic testing has failed to isolate.  Currently, we test with Embark - who test for over 200 different health issues and UC Davies - who test for genetic diversity.  Our puppy selection is based on the results of the genetic tests - as well as temperament and conformation.

We have found that a number of dogs carry a darkening gene.  Pups that are born cream turn apricot, or pups born apricot turn red.  Unfortunately, often this occurs when the puppies are older and have left us..... and unfortunatley, there is no genetic test yet to isolate the gene responsible.  Recently, we submitted a number of our dogs that have got darker to a study that was being done by UC Davis to assist in there studies - but at this point in time nothing has been found.

We have been fortunate to find a like minded breeder, who is interested in finding that darkening gene.  We have been able to find a line in particular that gets darker as it gets older - so we hope to be producing more of the same in the near future.    Please look at our page on the darkening poodles.  They do exist.
