The First Welshie

Introducing the Welsh Springer Spaniel

BIS RUBISS Australian Champion / Neuter Champion

Smarty Frodo des Vauriennes (imp NLDS)

20th September 2004 - 10th November 2016

I always had a curiosity about the 'Other Springer Spaniel', a red and white dog like, but so unlike my ESS.  Bored one night at work, I was browsing DOL and came across the Goldmaid Welsh Springer Spaniel website and fell in love with a photo of Jayde - Goldmaid Just Jayde.  The others on Debbie Meagher's site were also gorgeous and I left a message on her guest book stating how much Sabrina would love an WSS playmate, and that if any of her gorgeous kids wanted to retire to the sunshine of Qld to let me know. From the throwaway line on a website guest book came the next love of my life and I picked up Frodie from the airport on the Queens Birthday 2009.

He jumped into the back of the car and jumped into my heart.  Being retired from stud work (probably much to his dismay) he settled into a life of walkies, frolicking with Sabrina and Casey and generally being the man of a house of girls.  He fitted right in here and ruled his little harem of ladies (from the safety of the trees up the back of the yard!)

BUT....  the siren call of the show ring was whispering into the back of his mind, and as the Neuter class was becoming more on offer at shows in Qld, Debbie suggested that he might like to aim for his Neuter Title. So back we went to give it a go, me half expecting him to run around once and tell me he couldn't be bothered but NO! He decided that mastery of the Group 3 Neuters was to be his and WHAM! after a 5 year break, he glided to his Neuter title with his smiling face and wagging tail, charming many a judge along the way, with half of his shows going onto Neuter In Group.  He won Neuter In Show at the September 2014 Sporting Spaniel Club Of Queensland on his 10th birthday.

His crowning achievement was NUMBER ONE Neuter Gundog Queensland (DOL pointscore) for 2014, an honour we were aiming for but never expected we could achieve.  He was also Number 1 Neuter WSS in Qld and Australia!

Frodo was retired again when it was discovered he had osteo/chondrosarcoma just before Easter 2015. He underwent two cycles of a pioneering chemotherapy trial in order to advance the science of treatment of cancer in canines. Although not attending shows anymore, he came to visit Laura Meagher at the September 2016 SSCQ show and tried to drag his friend Karen into the ring as they walked passed the entrance! So the desire was still there - even at the grand old age of 12! His happy nature continues to be present in his many children, grand and great grand children all around Australia.

Frodo finally lost his battle against the cancer on the 10th of November when the lovely vet from the Albert Animal Hospital who diagnosed his cancer originally all those many months ago, gave him the freedom to grow his wings and he flew off to the Bridge to continue his adventures on the other side. His passing was felt worldwide and the huge impact he had on the gene pool in Australia is reflected in his many supreme/grand and champion offspring and the infusion of his happy nature most of all. Rest easy now my love xox
