DIOMEDE

(was DaneOlympus )

The Birthplace of the Alaskan Malamute in Western Australia.

EST 1980

The first Malamute here was LOBO .(Meryton Atasuk Anori . VIC)

He was from the first Litter in Australia bred by  Merylin and Tony Syme.

Hence the prefix Meryton.

He was a beautilful  seal and white dog .

It was hard showing a rare breed in those days  as the judges had nothing to compare with .

We didn't even have a proper standard for a long time .Eventually we adopted the UK one .

It is quite different to the one we use today .

We used to take it  to every show and give the the secretary in the hopes that the judge would read it and get it right !

We had a few in group wins with Lobo before we realise that he was a long coat .

We contacted the breeder who said he would send us another  .This time a bitch .

While we were waiting  he asked if we would like to show another dog to his title.

We jumped at this chance as we now had the bit between our teeth.

Nanook came to us at fifteen months old with very little training  but a wonderful personality.

We pesevered  and got him into the ring .

He became the FIRST

West Australian Champion .Nanook of the North (IMP.NZ)

We sent him back , as agreed, but to our surprise  and delight ,after he had been mated he was sent back to us .

He is in many pedigrees in the Eastern States.

Our bitch arrived and we titled her ,CH Meryton Makluk Greysky(Vic) AKA Sky, with Lobo were the parents of the FIRST litter in WA.

After some limited research (no internet in those days ) we realised that  these puppies were not really what we wanted  so we contacted the breeder of Nanook .

We formed  loose partnership with Yvonne Harris to import Amerinds Bell Chym Wolfsong (IMP.USA)

(AKA Princess)

We had her mated to Mals Abouts O Dus Make Me Proud  (USA) prior to leaving quarantine on Hawaii.

This was the FIRST Malamute litter import in Dam .1985.

Quarantine  in those days was a lot harder on the dogs and people as it involved four months in quarantine and one months residence in Hawaii and a further four months  quarantine in Australia .

In those days we could only bring dogs in through Spotswood in Victoria .

As Princess had  litter of six we had to pay for each  puppy in quarantine  plus the added expense of transport from Victoria .We decided to bring them in by road and they travelled  with racehorses in very posh transporter and arrived smelling of ....horses.

We were now faced with which to keep and which to send to Yvone.

We took photos ,like mug shots and sent them off.

We  decided on a male that became NZ & Aust CH DaneOlympus North Star (IMP.ID USA) He was used extensively in the Eastern States and will be found in the back ground  of many of todays dogs .

Of the other five puppies, four easely obtained their titles and the fouth,DaneOlympus Naskapi (IMP.USA I.D)

became a couch potato but a good stud too.He was mated to our FIRST UK Import Seacourt fire finch .

The result was one of our best producing bitches  DiomedeNumazawa, dam of our top winning bitch ,the FIRST Grand Champion Diomede E Ga Tah .

Numazawa did not finish her title due to losing part of an ear to a litter mate.

We sold the longcoat puppy as a pet but he was shown  and  titled

CH Dane Olympus Snow Kiana  (IMP.USA.ID)

Silly us kept all the other puppies and had lots of fun with  them .

CH DaneOlympus  Cochise  (IMP.USA.ID ) and sister CH DaneOlympus Tutchone  became our show team winning many groups and  show awards  between them .

The FIRST best brace in show at the Perth Royal Show was won by CH DaneOlympus Cochise and Grand Champion Diomede E Ga Tah .They repeated this win several times .

Cochise's last Royal win was BOB under  Shona Prebble  at nine and half years ,E Ga Tah took  the bitch cc  and RUBOB.

We eventually sold  CH DaneOlympus Sequoia to a loving home .

At this stage we decided that needed a prefix more suited to the breed so DIOMEDE was registered .

We produced the FIRST red but he hated the show ring so he was placed in a pet home .

We needed a bigger gene pool  so through the breeder of Princess we were put onto Vicky Jones .

Vykon Kennels in Georgia USA.We purchased what was to become the FIRST BIS Alaskan Malamute .

BIS CH Vykon's Cheechako of Diomede (IMP.USA) AKA Mister .

Vicky became our mentor and great friend .

From attaining his title with the first BIS ,Mister, went onto many more wins.including  BIS. RUBIS and many BIG and in show wins.
